Penetration vs. Absorption

Absorption is when a substance makes its way to the bloodstream. Penetration is when a substance makes its way to the different levels of the skin (not to the bloodstream).

It’s difficult to get ingredients into the lower layers of the skin. If there is no transepidermal delivery system in place; chances are, that particular topical isn't going anywhere.

It’ll sit on the skin’s surface or outer layers without penetrating into the deeper layers of the skin. There is a time and a place for both absorption and penetration, however, all ingredients are not meant to do both.

Once again, it is very difficult for a substance to be absorbed through the skin, making its way into the bloodstream. Some ingredients can be absorbed by your body, but not all.

There are ingredients, both synthetic and natural, that can be absorbed into the bloodstream that pose a risk and may cause harm.

Plant based ingredients can be potent, in both directions, not just synthetic ingredients. In certain instances, both are best utilized in moderation. There are pros and cons when using both synthetic and ‘clean’ skincare. In my experience, balance is the key to achieving and sustaining the skin you’re wanting; learning to listen to and observe your own skins reaction(s), thus making the small shifts and modifications needed to maintain healthy, balanced, beautiful skin.
